Academic and Personal Skills

The Rugby Portobello Trust Education Programmes

The Rugby Portobello Education Programmes offer alternative provision for 14-17 year olds who are not in mainstream education.

Our aim is to develop our students personally and academically, and to prepare them for the world of employment by developing their work skills to make them "work ready".

"Working with young people with an unshakeable belief in their capacity to achieve." Richard Thadchanamoorthy, Head of Education

Academic and Personal Skills Programme

Students spend fifteen hours a week studying at least five GCSEs including English Maths and Science, although where appropriate students have the flexibility to choose other courses to suit their needs.

In addition they study Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), which seeks to develop awareness of social issues and nurture personal development.

Business and Enterprise Programme

Students spend two days a week learning and actively engaging in Business and Enterprise. They have the opportunity to work together to run a small enterprise. The RPT uses its business supporters to provide extended work experience placements. Every student is supported in his or her development by a dedicated student mentor.

End Result

At the end of their time with us we aim to have enabled our students to achieve both academic success and to have developed their personal and work skills to a sufficient standard to progress to Further Education, apprenticeship or employment.

Case Study: Rob

A bright (though not overly academic) young person and a gentle character, he could not survive in the testosterone heavy atmosphere in his boys' school. He was deeply unhappy and was referred to RPT.
